CD Review and unboxing: T-ARA - Funky Town

Time for a brand new CD review! T-ARA had an incredible 2011 and they've started 2012 off with a bang - and the release of their album Funky Town. Funky Town comprises the 5 original tracks from their Black Eyes mini album but has been re-released with 3 brand new tracks - Lovey Dovey, 우리 사랑했잖아 (We Were In Love) and a club remix of Lovey Dovey.

Inside Cover and Disc

Musically, I think this album is a real winner. The album includes six individual tracks - Lovey Dovey, 우리 사랑했잖아, Cry Cry, Goodbye OK, O My God and I'm So Bad plus the club remix of Lovey Dovey and a ballad version of Cry Cry. Each track on the album (even the different versions of Lovey Dovey and Cry Cry) explores different genres of music and really encompasses T-ARA's diversity as a group. I think T-ARA has really created a niche for themselves as the "club" or "disco" group and Funky Town really shows off that they are real dancing divas. I personally think that T-ARA can be quite lacking when it comes to vocal abilities but their vocals totally fit their genre of music of danceable, exciting club music. Despite not being powerhouse vocalists, that's not to say that they don't shine on their ballads. In fact, 3 of the 8 tracks are of a slower pace and the girls have no problem conveying emotion in songs of a slower tempo.

I think the tracklisting of the album is rather odd. A ballad (우리 사랑했잖아) after the fantastic opening track of Lovey Dovey? A remix of Lovey Dovey as track 3? It may not be a coherent album from start to finish but Funky Town still works as a piece of music. What makes Funky Town additionally great is the album packaging. Real effort has been put into the making of Funky Town ensuring that the 7 girls' personalities shine through. As you can see from the pictures I've taken, the packaging of Funky Town is very bright, colourful and in a club setting. Strobe lights and sophisticated clothing give off the nightclub feel that T-ARA are trying to portray and it works well - just a like a photo album from a night out in Tokyo!

T-ARA are proving to be one of the most versatile groups from Korea. Always different, always fresh and a group that I always anticipate.
