REVIEW: A Pink - Snow Pink
Snow Pink is A Pink's second mini album and was released last December. Although I was not sold on them with their first mini album - Seven Springs Of Apink - I definately though this album was a step up and showcased their talents more.
Check out my tack by track review of Snow Pink below:
1) He's My Baby
I really enjoy this track and it definately follows the same vibe as their debut mini album. It's very cute, sugary-sweet and features high-pitched vocals and chants of "He's My Babe... He's My Babe". I think what irks me most about this song is that it is the first track. Although not a weak song by any means, it's just a mid-tempo R&B-inspred song that doesn't kick the album off with a bang. It's all very soft (with it's vocals, the strumming guitar and soft drum beat) and as an album opener, I don't think it quite works. Sweet, simple and unoffending.
2) MY MY
MY MY is A Pink's title track and to me, it's just a better version of He's My Baby. But whereas He's My Baby is a bit 'meh', MY MY is really great. It's very reminiscent of 90s Pop - 90s-style drum beats and synths, and a breakdown featuring finger snaps - but it surprisingly works. Despite it's retro undertones, MY MY still manages to remain current. Whereas their title song from their first mini album (몰라요 / I Don't Know) was a bit TOO cute, MY MY has a much wider appeal.
3) Yeah
Yeah is my favourite song on Snow Pink. It almost seems by mistake that A Pink got this track. Although it fits with their style and other songs, Yeah has some 'rave' qualities too it. 'Rave' may be the wrong word, but it's undeniable that Yeah incorporates 90s trance/dance elements. These elements have been dulled down, of course, so the song can still sound coherent with the rest of the album, but it still packs quite a punch. It's a very unique song that is very danceable and upbeat, yet not relying on heavy dance/techno beats.
4) 꿈결처럼
꿈결처럼 is the album's standard ballad. It's a normal piano-led ballad and there's much to say really. It reminds me of a few songs from the Piggy Dolls. The song may not evoke much emotion in me but it does demonstrate that (some of) these girls are quite commendable vocalists. A nice listen, nonetheless.
5) Prince
Prince is a harmlessly charming song, kind of ripped out of Girls' Generation back catalogue, in my opinion. It's all very basic, although it does feature a couple of electric guitars and sweeping violins, but overall it's a nice ending to this 5 track mini album. I think I'd have preferred to hear Girls' Generation's sing this on one of their past albums.
Everything considered, this is an unoffending and harmless mini album. I don't think it's a piece of music that will shock or shake up the industry. If you want a mini album to listen to for 17 minutes that is soft and sweet, then I'd definately recommend this. I do enjoy this mini album from time to time, and Yeah and MY MY are truly great songs, but I think A Pink has a long way to go before they're up their with the best.
