REVIEW: Miryo aka Johoney
I haven't posted for a week, and what better to return than with Miryo's first ever mini album? I've already written about how excited I was to hear this and now it's finally here! Miryo has produced and written her entire debut album Miryo aka Johoney, so let's see if it's been worth all the anticipation.
Check out my track by track review of Miryo aka Johoney below:
Party Rock (Feat. 개리 of 리쌍, THE KOXX)
The album begins with the upbeat, electronic dance number Party Rock. It features Gary of Leessang and THE KOXX and is the perfect introduction to this 5 track EP. It definately reminds me of LMFAO and fits perfectly into the 2011/2012 electronic dance scene. It really sets the album up perfectly - it shows Miryo's departure from the soulful and classy image of Brown Eyed Girls into the electronic, dirty and futuristic sound of the mini album. I think that if this song was in English, it'd be a worldwide smash.
DIRTY
DIRTY is Miryo's title track and I can see why - it's definately the best song on the mini album. Although a R&B/Hip-Hop number, the song successfully incorporates rock and electronic elements. All these elements compliment each other perfectly and the song doesn't sound messy at all. Miryo has always been known as a commendable rapper and can definately carry an entire song on her own, without the other members of Brown Eyed Girls behind her. It's so refreshing hearing Miryo on a song like this and after all those years with Brown Eyed Girls, we can finally see her talent on full show.
사랑해 사랑해 (Feat. 써니 of 소녀시대)
Love You, Love You features Sunny of Girls' Generation. Miryo and Sunny definately make an unlikely pairing but this song is one of the mini album's highlights. The two girls compliment each other perfectly on this beautiful ballad. Hearing Sunny's full vocal (instead of a few cute lines that we usually hear during her Girls' Generation songs) is such a treat. The song isn't groundbreaking at all though, but it's still a wonderful listen. It's the slowest track on the album yet this only further proves Miryo's talents as a versatile rapper - shining on the uptempo and slower numbers of the album.
Revenger (Feat. 루드페이퍼)
Although my least favourite on the mini album, I still enjoy Revenger. It reminds me of M.I.A. and is arguably the most darkest and alternative track on the album. I could imagine a creative and surreal video for this song, featuring strobe lights and explosions. At points, it sounds quite angry (hence the title Revenger) - with it's strong, laser sounds piercing through the track. It's a good song and shows Miryo's artistry, but it's not a track that I could have on repeat.
Leggo (Feat. 나르샤 of 브라운아이드걸스)
Along with 사랑해 사랑해, this is the second best song on the mini album. Featuring her bandmate Narsha, Leggo is a welcomed change after Revenger and concludes the electronic mini album perfectly. Even though this is a Miryo track, I feel that Narsha totally steals the limelight. Narsha, in comparison to her bandmates Ga-in and JeA, isn't a belter or powerhouse vocalist. But that's why Narsha shines here. Her vocals are so soft and delicate on this R&B/dance number, which fit perfectly with Miryo's agressive rapping skills. Singing in Korean and English, Narsha's vocals give the sometimes intense backing track a smooth and soft vibe.
Overall, I think this album was definately worth the wait. Although I can't say I was blown away, I am still very impressed. Although Miryo may only recieve a verse in each Brown Eyed Girls song, she can definately hold a whole song on her own (despite assisted with many featuring artists on the mini album). She's attempted a completely different sound to what we've come to expect from Miryo, and the result is a well-rounded EP that shows off her impressive rapping skills and versatile production abilities.
